A Dominant Performance....

The Rebels ended a long championship drought for MHS with a TSSAA State Championship in 1998. It was a dominant performance from beginning to end. The average margin of victory for the season was more than 26 points. The 557 points the team put up ranks 5th all time in MHS history.
The defense was stifling as well, as opponents were held to just 11 points per game on average. The Rebels were six games into the season before a team scored more than 10 points. A feat only accomplished 5 times in the 15 game season.
The team was lead by the most versatile quaterback in MHS history, Toki McCray. McCray would hold career records in completions (294), attempts (556), overall yardage (4777) and TD's (59) for six years. Some still stand today.
Michael Potter, the bruising Rebel running back still holds rushing marks in single season yardage (1805) and in carries (career 474, season 266).
Defensive linemen Matt Long still holds the longest fumble recovery for a TD in MHS History at a whopping 92 yards against William Blount.
That game also holds the distinction of being the worst defeat Maryville ever handed an opponent. When the dust cleared, the Rebels had amassed a score of 65-7.
This team boasted several memorable names such as Ryan Maples, Cole and Cody Hammontree, Morgan Shinlever, Josh Theroit, Nick Black, Chuck Prugh, Joey Gorley, Zack Pressnell, Brad Hilsher and future stars Jason Phillips, Scott Wilkes, Stephen Pacifico and Chase Anderson.
The 1998 football squad is one of the most powerful in the storied history of Maryville High School Football.
