Class of 1970
The Breakthrough Year...

The Rebels started the 1970 season with no TSSAA State
Championships to the schools record.  Sure, there had
been an AP championship in '64, but no state sanctioned
titles yet to speak of.

That would all change under the guiding hand of coach Ted
Wilson.  The Rebels were not to be denied in 1970,
demolishing cross town rival Alcoa 33-12 in the 3rd game of
the year.

That was only a taste of what was to come with defeats of
arch rivals Everett and Loudon to follow.  in that span, the
Rebs blanked three teams and up until the Loudon game,
held opponents to 12 or less points.

Maryville's explosive run based offense cranked out 426
points, while the stingy MHS defense only allowed 121
points.  Those 426 yards ranks the 70 team in the top 8 all
time at MHS.

The Rebels average margin of victory was an incredible 29
points that year as their opponents barely averaged 11
points per contest.

The Rebels managed 40+ points six times with the high
water mark of 54 points coming not once, but twice that
season, against Lafollette and Greeneville.

Ending the Six Year Drought...

Having strung together three region championships and
four playoff apperances in the five years previous, a lot of
teams would have been content with their success.

Not the 1976 Rebels.  Having flirted as a regional champ
the year before, the Rebels came out gunning in '76 and
racked up 7 straight wins, before eventually giving up the
only loss of the year to rival Loudon.

Defense was the key to the Rebels success in the
bicentennial year, allowing more than 16 points only once
all season.  As a matrer of fact, Maryville's opponents only
averaged a measly 11 points per contest.

In 5 of the 13 games, opponents scored 6 points or less
against the vaunted Rebel attack. in 8 games they scored
10 or less.

The Rebels saved the best for last though, crushing
perennial powerhouse Brentwood Academy, a private
school allowed to recruit top players, by a score of 27-0.

Maryville's line-up that year was a veritable who's who of
Rebel Football lore.  The team included such names as
Danny Spradlin, Mike Phillips, Willie Nelson, Rickie Loope,
Chuck Anderson, Tim Arnold, Keith McCord, and future
stars Ricky Maples and Mike Casteel.

Closing out the 70's in Style...

Having come so close they could taste a championship as
state runner-up in '77, the 1978 Rebels closed the 70's in
style.  With yet another impressive total package, the
Rebels steam rolled the competition, averaging 32 points
per contest, while only giving up an average 8 points per
contest.

The Rebels were stingy on defense, blanking 4 of the 14
teams they faced and only allowing 7 or less points in 8 of
those 14 contests.

Along the way, the Rebel offense pounded rivals Kingston,
Heritage, Loudon and Powell, outscoring the quartet
164-34.  Alcoa would make it a closer contest, but would
still fall 21-14.

In fact, the 78 Rebel squad is in the top 7 in total scoring in
the history of Maryville football with 450 points.

The Rebels capped off a stellar campaign just as they had
2 years previous, with another defeat of perrennial
powerhouse and private school, Brentwood Academy.  MHS
enjoys status in a very elite club in being one of the only
teams in the TSSAA to maintain a winning record against
Brentwood Academy.

The '78 squad also had its share of big names.  Mike
Casteel and Ricky Maples led the team and were aided by
Ronnie Irwin, David Reed, Kenny Unker, 3rd generation
Rebel Kent Kyle, Don White and Mike Nelson.

The undefeated 1978 Red Rebel squad will always be
remembered for the complete package the team brought to
the field every game and their dominating play, both on
offense and defense.
